Importing

Enspeller imports .docx, Markdown, and plain-text manuscripts. Parsing and structure review happen before content is committed.

Start an import

• From Home, select Import manuscripts to create or add to a project.
• From a project's manuscript list, select Import.
• Inside an open manuscript, select the import button in the binder.

You can select multiple manuscript files in one import. Optional project References use the same supported file types but remain separate from manuscript content.

Add chapters to an existing manuscript

1. Open the manuscript.
2. Select the import button in the binder, or use Import into this project from the project switcher.
3. Keep Add chapters to manuscript selected.
4. Choose one or more files.
5. Review the detected chapter boundaries. Rename, merge, or split items as needed.
6. Import. The new chapters are appended to the binder alongside the current chapters.

Choose Create separate manuscript when the file is another edition, volume, or independent work that should share the project's Canon and settings.

Existing text is not silently replaced. The review screen shows the selected destination before you confirm.

Structure review

Headings, page breaks, and chapter labels help Enspeller detect boundaries. When detection is not right, expand an item to choose a split point or merge it into the previous chapter.

Before confirming, check:

• front matter is not mistaken for the first chapter;
• chapter titles are in the desired order;
• scene breaks appear inside the correct chapter;
• accidental empty sections are removed; and
• each file is going to the intended project and manuscript.

References are separate

Research, prior books, and story bibles can be imported as References. They can support analysis but do not enter manuscript word counts, pacing, or export.

In the application these appear under Canon → References. See References.

Import availability

File parsing and manuscript creation can continue from local files during a connection problem. Reference indexing and requested analysis wait for a connection. If part of a multi-file import completes before a later step fails, the completed manuscript remains available and the flow identifies what still needs attention.

Troubleshooting imports

• No chapters detected: add recognizable headings or split the detected section manually during review.
• Too many chapters detected: merge false boundaries before importing.
• Unsupported or empty file: save as .docx, .md, or .txt and try again.
• Reference is pending: reconnect, then retry it from Canon → References.
