Binder and chapters

The binder is the ordered contents of the open manuscript. It keeps long work manageable by opening one chapter at a time.

Add and open chapters

  • Select + in the binder header to create a chapter.
  • Select a chapter title to open it.
  • Select the import icon to add reviewed material from a file.
  • Reopen a hidden binder from the left edge of the editor.

The manuscript total combines the chapter word counts. A chapter count may briefly refresh while a newly opened chapter finishes loading on the device.

Rename, reorder, and set status

Right-click a chapter for its available actions. Drag chapters to change binder order. Statuses help track progress:

  • Draft for active first-pass writing;
  • Revised for material that has completed a revision; and
  • Done for a chapter you consider complete for the current stage.

Statuses organize your workflow; they do not lock text or exclude a chapter from export.

Scene breaks and structure

Use a scene-break marker inside a chapter when the narrative changes scene without starting a new chapter. Do not create an empty chapter solely to produce visual space in export.

Headings and scene breaks help import, structure analysis, and Review copy export preserve the intended document shape.

Multiple manuscripts

Use the top-bar switcher to change manuscripts. Each manuscript has its own binder and word target. Related manuscripts in the same project share Canon, References, project settings, access, and history.

Archive a chapter

Archiving removes the chapter from the active binder after confirmation. For an older state of the entire manuscript, use History and restore. Create a restore point before a major reorganization.

If the wrong binder appears

Check the Project / Manuscript switcher in the top bar. Switching manuscripts replaces the binder; changing chapters does not.
