Scenes
Scenes is the writing inspector's view of the passage around your cursor. It keeps the most useful current-scene context beside the manuscript while leaving the writing surface undisturbed.
Open the current scene
Open the right-side inspector and choose Scenes. Move the cursor into a different scene and the panel follows. Explicit scene breaks separate scenes; chapters without a scene break are treated as one scene.
Scenes can show:
- what is happening in the scene;
- viewpoint, setting, tone, and story-time placement;
- characters present and their relevant established context;
- relationships between those characters;
- evidence-linked events, locations, objects, and plot threads;
- open continuity questions anchored inside the scene; and
- descriptive tension, dialogue, and exposition signals.
Select a character or story element to open its Canon entry. Use an evidence link to return to the supporting passage. Select a continuity question to reveal the highlighted text.
Keep writing while context updates
Scenes reads the last completed Canon, timeline, scene, and Critic analysis. It never sends work from the keystroke path and never changes the manuscript. When recent edits are waiting, the panel keeps the last completed context visible and labels it clearly. Use Refresh current scene context after sync when you want to analyze the latest changes.
Offline, cached scene context remains available. New connected analysis waits until the project can synchronize, but writing continues normally.
Ask a deeper question
Choose Ask about this scene to open Ask with the current scene already in context. Ask remains analytical and evidence-backed: it can cross-reference character history, continuity, or story time, but it does not write the scene for you.
Read uncertainty honestly
Missing information stays missing. If the manuscript has not established a date, place, participant, or event, Scenes does not invent one. Story time may therefore say Timing not established, and a newly written scene may remain sparse until synchronized analysis completes.
